Roof Strength in SUV's Influence Risk of Injury

Unfortunately, drivers are often lulled into a false sense of safety while driving an SUV. Perhaps it is the size of the vehicle that lends itself to that misconception.

The truth is, many SUV's roll over during accidents, and as many as 35 percent of vehicle deaths occur due to roll overs. To add to that, a recent study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that the strength of an SUV's roof has a direct influence on the risk of injury to the occupants. "We don't know just what happens to people in these crashes or what the injury mechanisms are," said Institute President Adrian Lund. "What we do know from the new study is that strengthening a vehicle's roof reduces injury risk, and it reduces it a lot."

The current requirement by the United States government is as follows: A vehicle's roof must be capable of withstanding a force 1.5 times the weight of the vehicle prior to reaching 5 inches of crush. However, that has been the requirement since as far back as 1973 for some vehicles. The government wants to bring the current safety requirement up to 2.5 times the weight of the vehicle.

Information Pertaining to Automobile Accidents

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Susy Owen

Wrongful Death Lawsuit Headed for Trial

In November of 2003 Josh Eppley was a seventh grade student at Tri-Valley Middle School in Ohio. According to a lawsuit filed by the parents of Eppley, Tri-Valley Middle School allowed 17-year-old Corey Jenkins to take their son out of school without their permission. Jenkins proceeded to drive with Eppley as a passenger in a car.

According to the police report, Eppley was ejected from the vehicle after it veered off the road hitting an embankment. Sadly, Eppley died as a result of the incident. A lawsuit has now been filed by Eppley's parents against the school due to the willful, wanton and reckless conduct and breach of duty of the employees of the school. At one point the boy's parents voluntarily dropped their suit involving the car crash only to refile at a later date. The attorney representing the school district, Michael E. Stinn, was not available to comment. The trial date has yet to be set.

Additional Information Pertaining to Automobile Accidents

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Susy Owen

Cell Phone Use Leads to Auto Crashes

It will come as no surprise to most that the use of cellular phones while operating an automobile increases the risks of a car accidents. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Administration studies show that close to 80% of automobile crashes and 65% of near crashes occurred within three seconds of some type of distraction. And the main cause of driver distraction is -you guessed it - cellular phone use.

In 1985, there were about 91,600 cell phone subscribers in the United States, whereas in 2005 that number was more than 197 million. Expect to see many new laws and regulations pertaining to the use of cellular phones while driving. They are already in affect in many states and are coming to California in 2008. Every driver has an enormous responsibility to drive safely when driving a vehicle and sharing the road with others. The way the law sees it, one can't be driving safely while distracted by a cellular phone or anything else.

Additional information pertaining to automobile accidents & motorcycle accidents

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Susy Owen

Two Die in Car Crash

In San Antonio Texas, two people lost their lives when they were involved in a head-on Collision on Loop 410. The incident involved an 18-wheeler and a concrete truck on the city's southeast side.

The truck driver blew a tire, which caused him to loose control of his vehicle. Once the tire blew the concrete truck crossed the median at which time it crashed into an 18-wheeler. There was a third vehicle involved in the crash also. Fortunately, none of the people in that vehicle were injured. As would be expected, the immediate vicinity was shut down for hours.

For more information on this subject, please refer to the section on Car and Motorcycle Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Susy Owen

Auto Safety System Saves Lives, Fuel & More

A device that is new to the average automobile could prevent as many as 30, 000 accidents and 660 deaths every year in the United States. According to Clyde Stech, President, MAXAIR ATMI, Inc., which created the safety system, "This feature is ready and available and could be on all new automobiles. It's a matter of consumers demanding it and auto manufacturers making it available."

Evidently, similar systems have been used in the trucking industry for years. The system MAXAIR detects and fill under inflated tires through an onboard compressor. The cost to the manufacturer of putting this device in a new vehicle is about $200. It has been reported that the new auto safety device can also save drivers a total of $5 billion in gas and reduce CO2 emissions by 250lbs per car annually.

For more information on this subject matter, please refer to our section on Automobile and Motorcycle Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Susy Owen
