More Toys Tainted with Lead

After the Tribune tested the lead content of toys coming out of Chicago-area stores, they found that many of the toys are tainted with lead. Some of the toys that were tested had levels more than 10 times as high as what is considered safe.

The tests were conducted on as many as 800 toys and other items sold in the United States, and dozens violated the federal safety limit. It would be naive of consumers to think they are protected from lead filled products. That is simply not the case.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the study conducted by the Tribune is the largest undertaken outside the agency. With respect to the findings, Julie Vallese, spokesperson for the safety commission said "It always welcomes credible information to be reported to the agency so that we could follow up to determine if in fact toys, based on our own scientific testing, are in violation of the law."
