Air travel in Europe and the United States accounts for 60 percent of global air traffic. An open skies agreement would not only allow more airlines to fly the trans-Atlantic routes, but it could also offer more affordable tickets.

The European Union (EU) and the United States are scheduled to hold more talks on the subject next month. The European Union has been pushing to get current restrictions lifted that limit foreign ownership of U.S. carriers.

There has been much opposition to go ahead with the plan to open up American aviation to outsiders due to a possible loss of jobs in addition to concerns regarding national security.
