A study known as ADOPT ( A Diabetes Outcome and Progression Trial) has given the FDA a reason to be concerned about what is clearly a defective drug. The study involved 4,360 patients. In that study, a significant number of female patients who received Avandia - also know as rosiglitazone - showed an increased number of arm, hand and foot fractures.

However, females that were given either metformin or glyburide did not show the same increase in fractures. The study showed no increase of fractures in the hip or spine areas, which are common fractures in postmenopausal women.

After an independent study by a safety committee, the findings were reported to be consistent with the findings in the ADOPT study. The study is continuing.
