In 2002 a Florida woman, Beth Hippely, was prescribed the blood thinner Warfarin as part of her cancer treatment. However, when she received her filled prescription from the Deerfield, Illinois based Walgreens, it was ten times the strength that her doctor has prescribed and subsequently caused her to have a stroke and eventually die. As a result, The company was sued for negligent breach of duty and wrongful death.

The increased prescription caused the Hippely's cancer to come back her lawyer Chris Search said. The increased dosage of Warfarin caused her to have a stroke. It interrupted her cancer treatment, which caused her to die needlessly. This wrongful death case had been ongoing for five years. As for the pharmacy, after they issued an apoligy, they said in part "We had hoped the verdict would have been fair and reasonable." It is unclear at this juncture whether they will appeal the verdict.
