California Could Stop Paying for Serious Hospital Errors

Californian's can expect to see changes in what Medicare will cover. In the latter part of 2008 Medicare will no longer pay for what they consider 'preventable errors' in hospitals.

Under bill AB2146, errors such as objects being left inside patients, and patients who receive the wrong blood type will no longer be covered. The idea is that these are preventable errors. Many hospitals argue that some conditions on the 'hit list' are not entirely preventable i.e., bed sores.

California is not alone with respect to non-coverage of preventable errors. According to the LA Times " Maine, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and New York have restricted payments for avoidable medical errors. And hospital associations in Minnesota, Washington and Vermont have pledged never to bill patients for the costs of correcting errors.

Cribs - Largest Product in U.S. History is Underway

Toys "R" Us and Babies "R" Us stores and affiliates nationwide sold cribs that are now part of the largest recall in U.S. history.

The cribs were sold for more than six years, from 2002 until May of this year. The company that manufactured this product, Jardine Enterprises, is based in Taiwan. However, the manufacturing of the cribs took place in China and Vietnam. The defect centers around the slats or spindles, which are breaking and can cause serious injury to children.

MotorCycle Crash Under Investigation

David Frazelle, 29, of Hawthorne, California was riding his motorcycle at approximately 6 p.m. on a Monday evening when he stuck a truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver was not harmed.

What is strange about this particular motorcycle crash is the fact that the truck did not slow or stop suddenly immeditely prior to the accident. Yet the decedent drove right into the back of the truck. The CHP is investigating the incident.

Lawsuit Raises Questions About Activis Totowa, LLC and Digitek

Questions have been raised in a class action suit about Actavis Totowa, LLC and their product, Digitek. The tablets were recalled after they went on the market with twice the active ingredient that they should have contained.

It seems the plant that is responsible for manufacturing the defective product had been warned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in a 2006 letter. The class action suit was filed in US District Court in New Jersey. The suit alleges that the manufacturer failed to provide periodic safety reports, which is why they were warned in 2006 by the FDA. Additionally, the suit claims that six potentially serious drug events going back to 1999, which were not reported to the FDA

Actavis Totowa, LLC is a United States manufacturing division of the international generic pharmaceutical company Actavis Group. Actavis manufactures the products for Mylan Laboratories, which are distributed by Mylan and UDL under the Bertek and UDL labels.

Canadian Government Hopes to Reduce Car Crashes

It is no secret that drivers are distracting while driving on an all-too-regular basis. And as a result of those distractions, car accidents increase substantially. Given that fact, the Canadian government and the Insurance Bureau of Canadian are educating Canadians about the dangers of distractions while driving with what is known as the D.U.M.B. car (Distractions Undermining Motorist Behaviour) simulator on the road. Great name, sure to get attention.

Students who get the opportunity to test the simulator, will find that destractions such as eating, drinking, using cell phone, applying makeup and texting while driving, have a huge impact on one's ability to react when quick reaction is called for. It is a wake-up call that the government a hoping people will heed. For those who take the test, their results will be posted on website at www.besmartsafe.ca

Elder Abuse on the Rise in Oklahoma

According to Oklahoma's Adult Protective Services, the abuse of elderly people in Oklahoma is on the rise. In fact, abuse has risen by a steady 3 % per year.

A spokesperson for Oklahoma's Adult Protective Services, Paul Needham, said that many of the elderly that are abused are abused by their own relatives. There is the case of the grandchildren who moved in with their grandmother and then proceeded to open a meth lab, says nursing home advocate, Renee Johnson. In yet another case, an elderly man's grandchildren moved into his home in order to get his monthly Social Security check signed over to them.

Who are these elderly people to turn to. No doubt, they often feel isolated and helpless. If you suspect an elder abuse situation, please call the authorities and give the elderly the help that they are so often unable to help themselves.

Rescue Drill Goes Forward After Ten Long Years

Thankfully there are not as many school bus accident as other types of auto accidents given the fact that they involve children. With that said, rescue drills by the fire department are a good idea. It really is essential that rescue personnel be prepared for in case of an emergency.

In Pope County, an EMS Rescue truck, as well as trucks from the Moreland Fire Department and Pottsville Fire and Rescue, recently particiapted in such a rescue type drill. There were approximately 25 workers dressed in full gear participating in a drill which involved cutting the back off a school bus with a saw. Crow Mountain Fire Department was sponsored by Pope County EMS Rescue.

The drill was clearly not a minute too soon. The last drill preformed was 10 years ago. EMS Director Doug Deurr said "I feel it's important to be prepared in the possibility of a school bus accident involving the youth of our community. We hope we never have to do it."

Failure to Follow FDA Rules Prompts Recall

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave orders to Hope Foods to shut down and recall all of their products that were made in their Texas location since 2007.

Hope Foods makes smoked seafood products. The company neglected to implement an adequate Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP). The plan is mandated by the FDA, and is considered critical.

"We simply will not allow a company to put the public's health at risk by not implementing adequate procedures and plans to produce safe food," said Margaret O'K. Glavin, associate commissioner for regulatory affairs.

The plan in question would identify all food safety hazards specific to each particular product. Once the hazards are identified, controls must be in place to prevent and/or control the hazards. As a result of the shut down, the FDA is advising consumers who have purchased any smoked seafood products to check with the place of purchase to determine if the products came from Hope Foods. If so, discard immediately.
