It appears that two brands of peanut butter - Peter Pan Peanut Butter and Wal-Mart's Great Value Peanut Butter - have been linked to almost 300 cases of salmonella by federal officials. Those cases were reported in 39 states. On a positive note, it appears that the contaminated brands were produced in a single plant in Georgia.

In Santa Barbara, California, it is feared that two new salmonella contamination cases may also be related to contaminated peanut butter. As I'm sure you can imagine, Wal-Mart has removed all of the contaminated brands of peanut butter from their store shelves. Although the recall is voluntary at this stage, I would venture to guess that all stores carrying the contaminated brands are also removing those products. The recall is voluntary due to the fact that the FDA is still investigating the outbreak. It is noteworthy that salmonella bacteria causes the illness of approximatley 40,000 Americans each year, and the death of as many as 600. Symptoms may include diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, dehydration and vomiting.
