Massive Crib Recall Announced; 2.1 Million Cribs Affected

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced today one of the largest crib recalls in United States history, involving cribs with dropdown sides.

This recall involves Stork Craft Baby cribs and Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo. All Stork Craft Baby cribs with manufacturing and distribution dates between May 2000 and November 2008 are included in this recall. All Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo have distribution dates between May 2000 and December 2004. The cribs were sold in various styles and finishes. The manufacture date, model number, crib name, country of origin, and the firm’s name, address, and contact information are located on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board. The firm’s insignia “Storkcraft baby” or “storkling” is inscribed on the drop side teething rail of some cribs. In the product that contains the “Fisher-Price” logo, this logo can be found on the crib’s teething rail, in the manufacturer’s instructions, on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board, and on the end panels of the Twinkle-Twinkle and Crystal crib models.

The federal government has recalled nearly 5 million cribs in the past two years -- many of them with drop down sides. A measure just approved by the organization that sets safety guidelines for the crib industry makes full-size cribs with dropdown sides a violation of voluntary safety standards. A federal ban will hopefully be in place soon.

The CPSC urges parents and caregivers to immediately stop using the recalled cribs and find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby. Consumers should contact Stork Craft to receive a free replacement kit, with new mattress support brackets.

Contact Stork Craft toll-free at (866) 361-3321 anytime to order the free replacement kit or log on to www.storkcraft.com
Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Susy Owen

2009 Mazda6 Recalled; Door May Open While Driving

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced Mazda's recall of 29,000 of its 2009 Mazda6 vehicles.

The defect in the outer door handles causes them to stick in the open position and thus prevents the door from locking shut. The door may open while driving and, if unrestrained, passengers are in danger of being thrown from the vehicle.

Mazda dealers will inspect all the Mazda6’s door handles and replace or repair them, if needed, at no cost to the owner. For more recall information, Mazda6 owners should call Mazda at 800-222-5500 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.
Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Susy Owen

New Safety Standards Sought for ATVs

ATV safety standards have long been a concern of consumers and law makers alike. The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (H.R. 4040), which is before the Senate, includes ATV safety provisions that would codify mandatory safety standard for ATVs. The Senate is expected to approve the bill, and President Bush is expected to sign the legislation this month.

The Coalition for Safe and Responsible ATV use is comprised of Honda, Kawasaki, Polaris, Suzuki, and Yamaha. They Coalition want all companies that import or sell ATV to comply with the same safety measures that U.S. ATV manufactures have complied with for years.

You may not be totally shocked to hear that of great concern are the nonestablished ATV companies, generally from China, that have entered the market in droves. As a result of these imports thousands of ATVs are being recalled for dangerous, safety issues. It is estimated by The Coalition that sales of these noncompliant ATVs comprise as much as one-third of all new sales in the US. Clearly, these new safety measures are long overdue.

Trial Underway on Parkinson's Drug Gambling Effect

Mirapex, a drug used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, has been linked to the onset of "pathological gambling." Mirapex marketers Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Pfizer Inc. and Pharmacia Corp. have been accused of knowing of this link as early as September 2004.

A Minneapolis federal judge is one of more than three hundred consolidated lawsuits that claim the sellers of the drug failed to alert consumers of the risk of not only compulsive gambling but of aggressive behavior as a result of taking the drug. In addition to punitive damages, the allegations include strict product liability, negligence, negligent misrepresentation and breach of warranty.

Defense attorneys are seeking to have the trial divided into liability and punitive damage phases. They do not wish to have the companies’ finances disclosed during a single trail. They believe that their finances are irrelevant to their liability and would be unduly prejudicial.

Charbonneau, one of the many plaintiffs in this case, opposes the idea, saying the liability and damages issues are "intertwined."
Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Susy Owen

E D Tablets Seized after Recall Refusal

SEI Pharmaceuticals, Inc. of Miami, Florida is responsible for producing a drug known as Xiadafil VIP tablets, which is marketed as a dietary supplement to treat erectile dysfunction. When the Food and Drug Administration recently requested a voluntary recall by the corporation, they must have mistaken that request for a suggestion, considering the fact that they refused to do a recall!!!!!

Lots 6K029 and 6K209 of Xiadafil contain an undeclared ingredient. These products were given away at trade shows in addition to being sold. Due to the company lack of good decision making, the FDA sent in the marshals to seize the products. The FDA has not approved Xiadafil VIP for ED or any other drug use, and the safety and effectiveness of this product is currently unknown. I’m guessing that it won’t be approved in the very near future.
