Bad new for sushi lovers. Recent laboratory studies conducted on the sushi tuna in 20 Manhattan stores and restaurants have found mercury levels that exceed the acceptable levels of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

"No one should eat a meal of tuna with mercury levels like those found in the restaurant samples more than about once every three weeks," said Dr. Michael Gochfeld, professor of environmental and occupational medicine at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, N.J. The tuna that was sampled was bluefin, and although these particular samples were in New York City, experts believe if tests were conducted in other areas there would be similar finding. Mercury can cause a health risk for pregnant women and children. It is also believed that individuals who consume mercury have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and neurological symptoms.
