Twice the Fatalities in Crashes Involving Small Cars

The Institute for Highway Safety released a report today. The findings were that Americans who buy the smallest cars on the market are twice as likely to have fatal accidents as drivers of midsize and larger vehicles.

Due to the increased sales of the popular fuel efficient mimicars, the tests were preformed for the first time by the institute. According to the report, the fatality rate in minicars between one and three years old was 144 deaths per every 1 million registered vehicles. That compared with a rate of 70 deaths per million for midsize cars and 67 per million for the largest cars on the road today.

According to the report size is not the only factor affecting the safety of minicars. Side airbags play a vital role in safety also. However, some models do not come with airbags as a standard feature. Next time you buy a car and want to upgrade your stereo, you would be well advised to consider adding additonal safety features instead.
