One Killed in Crash on 405

A 25-year-old Santa Monica woman was killed Friday when she lost control of her subcompact car and slammed into a tractor-trailer truck on the northbound San Diego (405) Freeway, officials said. The driver of the car, Dawn Hanna, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The impact forced both the car and the big rig into the center divider of the freeway, just south of Ventura Freeway. Authorities had to close lanes on both sides of the 405.

A third vehicle, driven by a 31-year-old woman, was also involved in the crash, officials said. The unidentified woman, who is 37 weeks pregnant, was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, officials said.

Castaic Accident Injures Two

Arcadia resident Noel Burden, 69, was driving his 2007 Chevrolet Corvette south on The Old Road near Hasley Canyon Road when he pulled into the northbound lane to pass the vehicle in front of him, said Officer Michelle Esposito of the California Highway Patrol.

Burden was severely injured when he crashed head-on into another vehicle. The crash occured on Monday night around 8:20 p.m.

Burden failed to pass the vehicle while driving no more than 35 mph, and slammed head-on into a Nissan Pathfinder driven by Corraine Baggaley, 52, of Castaic, Esposito said.

Baggaley was driving about 45 mph. The speed limit along that stretch of The Old Road is between 50 and 55 mph, Esposito said.

Burden required assistance from firefighters to exit his vehicle, while Baggaley got out on her own.

Both were reportedly wearing their seatbelts and were taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, Esposito said. Burden suffered severe injuries, Esposito said, and Baggaley was complaining of pains.

The crash is still under investigation. No charges had been filed at the time of the article.

Hulk Hogan's Son in Horrific Crash

As many are not doubt aware Nick Bollea better known as Nick Hogan "Hogan Knows Best" fame was the driver of a vehicle that was totaled in a horrific car crash last Sunday in Clearwater Florida. While Nick was released from the hospital with very minor injuries, his passenger and good friend, John J. Graziano, was not so fortunate. He was critically injured after suffering from a severe head injury as a result of the crash.

Nick lost control of the vehicle he was driving. The car spun out of control on State Road 60 in Coldwater, Florida. It has been reported that Nick has been sited several times for speeding in the last 12 months. Friends and family are holding a bed side vigil the critically injured Graziano who is well liked and has served in the marines. Please, drive safely out there.

Man Killed on I-5 While Changing Tire

According to California Highway Patrol, a man was changing the right rear tire on his 2004 Volkswagen Jetta along the right shoulder of the northbound Interstate 5 when he was struck and killed.

The driver of the Peterbuilt three-axle truck, Eliodoro Hernandez, was driving south of Pyramid Lake just after midnight on Tuesday. Hernandez immediately pulled off to the shoulder and called 9-1-1.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released. No charges have been filed at this time.

Chatsworth Woman Killed in Head-on Collision

According to a California Highway Patrol report, a 35-year-old Chatsworth woman was killed in a head-on car crash on Saturday while heading southbound on San Francisquito Canyon Rd.

The woman collided with a second driver who CHP identified as a 35-year-old Saugus man. He suffered minor injuries and declined medical attention at the scene.

The man, driving a 1999 Dodge veered onto the right shoulder, but was unable to avoid the woman as her 2003 Kia drifted into the northbound lane.

The Kia was traveling at an unknown rate of speed, and the report did not indicate the woman was wearing a safety harness.

She was airlifted to Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills where she died at 9:08 a.m.

The cause of the crash was unknown.

Rescue Drill Goes Forward After Ten Long Years

Thankfully there are not as many school bus accident as other types of auto accidents given the fact that they involve children. With that said, rescue drills by the fire department are a good idea. It really is essential that rescue personnel be prepared for in case of an emergency.

In Pope County, an EMS Rescue truck, as well as trucks from the Moreland Fire Department and Pottsville Fire and Rescue, recently particiapted in such a rescue type drill. There were approximately 25 workers dressed in full gear participating in a drill which involved cutting the back off a school bus with a saw. Crow Mountain Fire Department was sponsored by Pope County EMS Rescue.

The drill was clearly not a minute too soon. The last drill preformed was 10 years ago. EMS Director Doug Deurr said "I feel it’s important to be prepared in the possibility of a school bus accident involving the youth of our community. We hope we never have to do it."

Six Injured in Long Beach Multi-vehicle Collision

Six people were injured, one of them critically, in a five-car collision on the eastbound 91 Freeway in Long Beach early this morning, authorities said.

Firefighters responded to the report of an injury accident and a vehicle on fire shortly before 5 a.m. on the freeway at Paramount Boulevard, said spokesman Jackawa Jackson on the Long Beach Fire Department’s blog.

“There were five vehicles involved in the collision," Jackson said.

The car was on fire when firefighters arrived, but the driver managed to climb out before it was engulfed in flames. About a dozen firefighters spent 10 minutes trying to extricate a passenger from one of the wrecked car.

Five people suffered moderate to minor injuries, and one was critically injured. All but two were treated at nearby hospitals. The cause of the crash was under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.

Cell Phone Use Leads to Auto Crashes

It will come as no surprise to most that the use of cellular phones while operating an automobile increases the risks of a car accidents. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Administration studies show that close to 80% of automobile crashes and 65% of near crashes occurred within three seconds of some type of distraction. And the main cause of driver distraction is -you guessed it - cellular phone use.

In 1985, there were about 91,600 cell phone subscribers in the United States, whereas in 2005 that number was more than 197 million. Expect to see many new laws and regulations pertaining to the use of cellular phones while driving. They are already in affect in many states and are coming to California in 2008. Every driver has an enormous responsibility to drive safely when driving a vehicle and sharing the road with others. The way the law sees it, one can't be driving safely while distracted by a cellular phone or anything else.

Woman Dies After Colliding With Trash Truck

A woman died this morning when the car she was driving crashed into a trash truck near a Harbor Freeway overpass in Wilmington.

The 6 a.m. crash near Pacific Coast Highway and Figueroa Street forced the closure of the highway from Figueroa to Wilmington Boulevard, said Sgt. Jeff Hamilton of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The cause of the accident was under investigation. Hamilton did not know whether the trash truck driver was hurt.

CA Says No Texting, Emailing or Instant Messaging While Driving

Last Thursday, California officially became the 6th state to ban texting, and other communication while driving. The law comes after it was determined that cell phone use holds the highest association with car crashes than any other cause, according to California Highway Patrol Sgt. Trent Cross. The ban includes texting, email, instant message and all other methods of two-way communication. A CHP spokeswoman stressed that the law affects drivers even while stopped at a traffic light.

First time offenders are fined $20, followed by $50 for infractions thereafter. It must be noted that the addition court costs, of local jurisdiction’ penalties, and other fees may result in a fee up to five times that.
