Massive Crib Recall Announced; 2.1 Million Cribs Affected

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced today one of the largest crib recalls in United States history, involving cribs with dropdown sides.

This recall involves Stork Craft Baby cribs and Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo. All Stork Craft Baby cribs with manufacturing and distribution dates between May 2000 and November 2008 are included in this recall. All Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo have distribution dates between May 2000 and December 2004. The cribs were sold in various styles and finishes. The manufacture date, model number, crib name, country of origin, and the firm’s name, address, and contact information are located on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board. The firm’s insignia “Storkcraft baby” or “storkling” is inscribed on the drop side teething rail of some cribs. In the product that contains the “Fisher-Price” logo, this logo can be found on the crib’s teething rail, in the manufacturer’s instructions, on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board, and on the end panels of the Twinkle-Twinkle and Crystal crib models.

The federal government has recalled nearly 5 million cribs in the past two years -- many of them with drop down sides. A measure just approved by the organization that sets safety guidelines for the crib industry makes full-size cribs with dropdown sides a violation of voluntary safety standards. A federal ban will hopefully be in place soon.

The CPSC urges parents and caregivers to immediately stop using the recalled cribs and find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby. Consumers should contact Stork Craft to receive a free replacement kit, with new mattress support brackets.

Voluntary Nationwide Recall of Prescription Prenatal Vitamins and Iron Supplements

Ther-Rx Corporation issued a voluntary nationwide recall of prescription prenatal and iron supplement nutritionals at a wholesale level. According to the FDA website, the products may have been manufactured under conditions that did not sufficiently comply with current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP).

Trial Underway on Parkinson's Drug Gambling Effect

Mirapex, a drug used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, has been linked to the onset of "pathological gambling." Mirapex marketers Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Pfizer Inc. and Pharmacia Corp. have been accused of knowing of this link as early as September 2004.

A Minneapolis federal judge is one of more than three hundred consolidated lawsuits that claim the sellers of the drug failed to alert consumers of the risk of not only compulsive gambling but of aggressive behavior as a result of taking the drug. In addition to punitive damages, the allegations include strict product liability, negligence, negligent misrepresentation and breach of warranty.

Defense attorneys are seeking to have the trial divided into liability and punitive damage phases. They do not wish to have the companies’ finances disclosed during a single trail. They believe that their finances are irrelevant to their liability and would be unduly prejudicial.

Charbonneau, one of the many plaintiffs in this case, opposes the idea, saying the liability and damages issues are "intertwined."

Maclaren Recalls Over One Million Strollers Due to Possible Finger Amputation

British company Maclaren recalled about 1 million strollers on Monday due to a hinge mechanism with the potential to amputate childrens' fingers. The US Consumer Product Safety Commision received reports of 15 incidents over the last 10 years.

The affected models include Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller.

Consumers should contact Maclaren USA for a free repair kit that will cover the faulty joint.

Consumers should stop using the strollers immediately and call Maclaren toll-free at (877) 688-2326, the company said.

Barr Laboratory Voluntarily Recalls 20mg Dextroamphetamine/Amphetamine Tablets

Barr Laboratories, Inc. issued a voluntary recall of Dextroamphetamine Saccharate, Amphetamine Aspartate, Dextroamphetamine Sulfate and Amphetamine Sulfate (Mixed Salts of a Single Entity Amphetamine Product) 20mg Tablets, 100 count bottles, lot number 311756. The affected lot may contain some tablets exceeding weight requirements which may lead to super-potent tablets.

Side effects of an excessive dose include cardiovascular, neurologic, psychiatric and gastrointestinal reactions such as: palpitations, tachycardia, hypertension, headache, tremor, tic, dyskinesia, dizziness, blurred vision, sweating, insomnia, agitation, euphoria, mania, anxiety, restlessness, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth, and decreased appetite.

The tablets are in the form of a peach colored oval, debossed with b/973 on one side and 2/0 on the other side. Barr distributed the affected lot between 06/11/09 and 06/16/09. Only lot 311756 is affected by this recall.

Customers should cease use and return the product to a pharmacy. Wholesalers and retailers should cease distribution and examine their inventory immediately.

14 Freeway Reopens After Multi-vehicle Collision

According to California Highway Patrol, a multi-vehicle accident closed a portion of the northbound 14 Freeway north of Placerita Canyon Road. The number of vehicles has not yet been confirmed but the collision included at least one rollover.

All four lanes were reopened by 6:33am.

Fisher-Price Recalls 200,000 Rainforest Portable Play Yards

Fisher-Price is recalling around 200,000 Simplicity Rainforest Portable Play Yards due to over 1,350 reports of one or more rails collapsing. Children have received injuries from bumps and bruises to broken noses and a chipped tooth.

Although Fisher-Price did not manufacture or sell the play yards, they do feature the Fisher-Price logo. Consumers should immediately stop using the product and contact Fisher-Price for assistance in replacing their unit. Specific model numbers include 5310 RNF, 5310RNFC, and 5310RNFW. The model number is located on a sticker on one of the legs underneath the play yard.

Retailers and specialty children's stores nationwide sold the play yards from January 2007 through January 2009 for about $100.

Man Dies on Motorcycle after He Fails to Stop

According to local police, a thirty-something man died on Saturday when his motorcycle collided with a car.

The decedent, David Anthony Hall of Britain, did not stop at a posted stop sign. As a result, his motorcycle collided with a Oldsmobile. He didn't stand a chance, and was soon pronounced dead at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

As for the driver of the Oldsmobile, he had to be freed from his vehicle by the fire department. That driver, Larry Callis, 47, broke his arm as a result of the incident and was treated at the same local hospital as the decedent. It is presently unknown if this incident was alcohol related.

Judge Involved in Sexually Harassment Scandal

Liz Overstreet filed a wrongful termination complaint to the Texas Work Force Commission in February of this year. Additionally, she filed a complaint with the Texas Judicial Commission. Overstreet claims that she was sexually harassed by the Lubbock County Sheriff's Court Bailiff Leroy Morrison. More specifically, her claim centers around inappropriate hugging by Morrison. Overstreet further claims that as a result of the filings she was wrongfully terminated.

"Right now, I can't get into the specifics of the allegations, responses to the allegations and any support for either side, is covered under a confidentiality rules both by the state and judicial commission and TWC," says Shawn Twing, Judge Brad Underwood's Attorney.

Apparently, the day after she filed a complaint on Morrison, Judge Underwood accused her of sexually harassing him. They say timing is everything. It can take more than 6 months for the Texas Work Force Commission or Texas Judicial Commission to make a ruling.

Vans International Foods Recall Wheat Free Pancakes

Van’s International Foods is voluntarily recalling the following product: 12.4 ounce package of frozen Van’s Wheat Free Homestyle Pancakes with the lot number listed below because they contain undeclared wheat, gluten, milk and egg in the product.

People who have allergies or sensitivities to wheat, gluten, milk or eggs may run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

The 118 cases of recalled Van’s Wheat Free Homestyle Pancakes may have been distributed in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, District of Columbia, New Jersey, New York, California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Washington, Oregon, Texas, Idaho and Hawaii, through retail outlets that include but may not be limited to Whole Foods, Wegmans, Giant Carlisle, Sprouts and Martins. The distributors and the retail customers involved have been notified.

The product comes in a 12.4 ounce package which is beige with an orange stripe on the top and a triangular blue gluten-free call out in the upper right-hand corner with the lot number 200060629B1 located on the side flap of the box. The “Best if used by” date is March 30, 2010 also printed on the same flap.

Consumers should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund or send the box top with the printed lot number to the address below to receive five free coupons for any Van’s waffle, pancake, or French toast stick product 12.4 ounce or smaller.
